The 8th Sin!
Updating "The Seven Cardinal Sins" The 8th is Hypocricy!
"Standing on the Side of Love", "Liberty and Justice for ALL"; fine words, heroic words, but merely pale shadows of greatness if we preach and fail to practice. Stand up! Speak up! Let everyone know what we stand for, what you stand for. When you truly believe in a principle and fail to practice that is sinful!
I propose that there are eight cardinal sins; the sin added to the classic seven is the sin of hypocrisy.
To say you believe in “loving your brother” and practicing hatred is a sin.
To say you believe in equality while you practice discrimination is a sin.
To say you believe in justice while you practice bigotry is a sin.
To say you believe in truth while you make people to fear being who
they truly are is a sin.
To say you believe in liberty, yet close your mind to allowing freedom of
choice is a sin.
Stand up, speak up, do not allow sinful conduct to slink quietly unnoted into the dark alley of hypocrisy.
Pastor Martin Niemöller, in a speech before the Confessing Church in Frankfurt, Germany, put forth this:
“They came first for the Communists, and I didn’t speak up because
I wasn’t a Communist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I didn’t speak up because
I wasn’t a Jew.
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I didn’t speak up because
I wasn’t a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Catholics, and I didn’t speak up because
I wasn’t a Catholic.
Then they came for me and by that time no one was left to speak up.”
